Puff piece reporter, Brandy Alexander, is determined to win the battle of self-improvement. She is eating better (or at least telling people she is), working out (if sparring with a guy who fishes doughnuts out of the gutter and eats them counts), and checking her impulsive behavior at the door. But it's hard to stay on track when her own therapist gives her up as a lost cause. What's even harder fro Brandy is turning down someone in trouble.
Enter Crystal, a young teenage runaway whose friend, Star, has gone missing. Star was last seen getting into a mysterious stranger's car. In her efforts to reunite Crystal with Star, Brandy quickly becomes immersed in the dangerous subculture of homeless youth. As Brandy gets in over her head with hostile street gangs, pimps and others who prey upon the young teens, she looks to the tough and savvy Nicholas Santiago to help her navigate the mean streets.
Soon, Brandy realizes that there is more behind Star's mysterious disappearance than she thought, and enlists the aid of ex-boyfriend, Detective Bobby DiCarlo, to help her solve an ever-growing tale of intrigue.
Add to an already full plate planning her best friend's baby shower and nursing a broken heart, courtesy of Nick, and you've got the makings for the latest Brandy Alexander Mystery.

I accidentally stumbled upon this series and couldn't be happier. The author pens Brandy & co. so well it makes you feel like you not only know them but you want to join them! It's been a while since book characters stayed with me after the end of a book or series, but I'm so happy to say that's how I feel about the Brandy Alexander Series. I can't wait for the next installment.Brandy is brought fully to life under the careful pen of Shelly Fredman. She gives us backstory without bogging down Brandy's character. Ditto for the rest of her crew. Brandy has plenty of flaws and sometimes you'll feel like throttling her, but it just makes her come across more 'real'.
Although the book has the necessary romantic ups & downs, the plot NEVER suffers for it. In fact, Fredman's spins the best 'who done it' & keeps it interesting right up until the end. As for the romantic triangle of the past 3 books, it gets a bit of resolution in this book. I hope it remains true for future books, because after a while the 'who to choose' angle gets both dull & annoying causing the reader to not give a hoot anymore(a'la Stephanie Plum). It is understandable how each of Brandy's suitors, the detective Bobby and the mysterious Nick leave her flip-flopping between them, I feel the same way at times between these two. But I think it's smart of Fredman to resolve the issue rather than using the tired and overdone Stephanie Plum template.
All the denizens of this South Philly crew have their good days and bad; good qualities and bad; but no matter what they are always there for each other and that's what makes me love this series. I've almost come to think of them as friends...and that's the best compliment I can give any author. Shelly Fredman's created a world I'm happy to get lost in for a few hours.

No Such Thing As A Free RideA Brandy Alexander Mystery No Such Thing AsA Brandy Alexander Mystery Book 4 edition by Shelly Fredman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I just finished reading all of the the "No Such Thing As A..." series and they were just delightful. What a great way to spend your time reading!
The author did a wonderful job of building a strong sense of community and purpose with the story. You could see the neighborhoods and experience the relationships between the family and the friends. Strong bonds of friendship, trust and love. The author was deeply descriptive with all of the players in the story, from the lead character Brandy to the supporting cast of Janine, Fran, John, Carla and others.....including Alphonso. Even the cat Rocky and the dog Adrian had a positive part and added value to the story. Not to be outdone, the description of Brandy's love interest, Nick, was delicious. The dark, brooding troubled soul that only Brandy could rescue. Brandy is the ultimate bleeding-heart heroine; determine to help those who need it and always figuring it out at the last minute. Father Sal & Uncle Frankie were heroes in their own way and added depth and dimension to the story. I was very pleased with the conclusion of the 4th book and how the author brought things to conclusion. I'm a sucker for a happy (but not trite) ending.
By mistake, I actually read the 3rd book first. It was good but I felt as if I was missing something, which I was books 1 & 2. (lol) So, I read them in order (re-reading #3) and by the time I finished the series, it had all come together I was thoroughly pleased. I would often laugh out loud at Brandy's thoughts and actions and was sorry to see the story end. Hopefully there will be more of the Brandy Alexander books to come.
For this genre of books, I feel this is the top of the line! Memorable characters with a window into their world and their lives; a great storyline, action, fun, romance, love......just great reading entertainment.
The events of the past year have taken their toll on Brandy, and the people who care about her are starting to voice their concerns. So Brandy tries her hand at a bit of self-improvement (though in all honesty it's a half-hearted effort at best). When she encounters a young runaway at the gym, Brandy gets drawn into the ugly world of street kids and the people who harm and exploit them. Her commitment to leading a less frenetic lifestyle gets left in the dust as Brandy searches for a missing teen and stumbles across a dangerous conspiracy.
As this series progresses, the mysteries become more intense and realistic. The plot was well thought out, and there's still plenty of humor to keep the story from feeling too heavy. The characterization in this series is terrific, and with each book I feel a little more invested in what happens to these people. Yes, some of the situations are exaggerated; a bit over-the-top, but the individual characters and their interactions with each other ring true.
Brandy's first person narrative showcases her self-deprecating humor, and the dialog has an authentic feel to it. There's just the right amount of romance, with Brandy trying to figure out where her "ex" fits into her current life and whether or not there's any future with the enigmatic Nick. This is a terrific series for those who like a light mystery with a good portion of romance and plenty of humor. I'm so glad someone recommended these books to me - I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these characters.
Series Brief Brandy Alexander is a 28 year old "puff piece" reporter that has recently moved back to her native Philadelphia. In between solving mysteries, she tries to figure out what to do about the two men in her life. Mostly she's busy just trying to stay one step ahead of whoever is out to get her this week.
Frequent strong language and some sexual content. There are one or two brief love scenes that are not particularly explicit, but they're not "closed door" either.
