The Elemental Mixology book contains thousands of historic, classic and recent drinks - arranged and prepared according to the principles of traditional, American mixology. There are also sections on glassware, tools, liquor selection and the history of mixed drinks. The drink recipes are presented by genre, sub-genre, family, degree of fanciness and by base alcohol. This lets the reader look for drinks without knowing names - or whether they even exist. Drinks can also be found simply using the index. If this book were presented as original work, one could reasonably argue that its substance is little more than the systematic presentation of pre-prohibition American mixological tradition. If this book were presented as nothing more than the systematic presentation of traditional American mixology, one could reasonably point out that some of its substance is not found in the old books. Think of this book as being essentially true to the old tradition - especially had it continued past 1920.

As other reviewers have stated, the only book you'll need to keep your bar at home active and give you a leg up on the old school simple basics when you go beyond your home.
Andrew Willett is an incredible master at teaching the art and craft of mixology. This book is both an amazing resource as well as a valued supplement to his even-more-amazing mixology course. The book provides outstanding information on the historic evolution of mixed drinks, meticulously sourced and tested recipes and variations of recipes, and perhaps most importantly the pre-prohibition-system for categorizing all drinks. Moreover, once you've taken his courses (or even if you haven't), the book becomes an ongoing resource to a continued exploration of the world of mixology. His approach allows one to understand mixology beyond just memorizing recipes and begin to understand the world of mixed drinks at a deeper, more "elemental" level. Highly recommend the book (and the classes if you happen to be in Southern California).
This book has hundreds of drink recipes that are no nonsense. These are the real deal. There's no cool guy pretense to anything in Andrew's process or book. It's simple and straightforward and so well thought out and studied in a way that only Andrew could pull off. If you're interested in making quality drinks, learning a little about the history of why a drink is what it is - buy this book.
Absolutely - by far - the best book on the subject of tending bar and mixology you could ever want. It's very large and it is VERY accurately detailed as to the proper glasses down to the proper ice cubes and all the detailed instructions on drink making for just about each and every type of drink that is out there. He gives a VERY accurate history on "most" all of the drinks, their accurate names and the correct type... and I could go on and on. There are no photos really - BUT - with the serious book, you don't need any.
If you want to learn about all the pre-prohibition recipes from the 1800's to 1919, that made drinking "old school" great.... it's in there. Drinks from the 1800's to the 1990's... this is my bible for the art of mixology. AND, if you are in the L.A. area, he has an outstanding Elemental Mixology class that available.
Nearly 600 pages of astoundingly thorough alcohol, history, socioeconomic, style, art, science and overall drink making beauty. If you're remotely entertaining the idea of making a few drinks, and interested in the proper ways to mix, measure, and serve, this is a great book. While this book has many, many recipes - it is substantially more than a recipe book. If you're looking for the quick reference cocktail how to - this serves your purpose, but is less ideal. If you're looking to learn and generally improve your skills - this is a must.
Really thorough; everything you need to know to become an expert. Explains terms, serving glasses, measurements, etc.; best book I've found so far.
Out of a couple of dozen drink books I own, this is my go-to.
Possibly the best book illustrating the history and systematic craft of making drinks as was done before the true craft of the drink died before prohibition. A lot of creativity is bringing drinks back into popularity but most don't come close to a well made, properly proportioned original.
Intensive research from 19th century and some 20th century original books. Starts with the basic structure for each type of drink. Cocktails are only one part of the book as a lot of what we drink are ensembles, punches, slings, sours flips, fizzes etc. (not actually cocktails despite what they are called on menus and book covers) and this book clearly shows the difference illustrating the history of the craft. Not a pretty table book with a lot of pictures but a true study of the craft. Once drink structures are understood it is a great starting point for one's own creative riffs on the originals. I have had an early edition of this for a few years and the newest version is nicely updated.
